"#Take the Knee”

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 13 hours ago
*"#Take the Knee”* by James Howard Kunstler There’s a lot to complain about in this deranged republic - if it even still is one - but the burdens of being a multimillionaire football player would not be at the top of my list. Personally, I find it a little peculiar that we have to play the national anthem before any sporting event. All it really shows is how insecure we are as a nation that we have to display our love of country in this obsessive manner. Same with congressmen and their stupid flag lapel pins, or the flag in front of Denny’s chain restaurants. Are eaters of the “lum...more »

North Korea's Ultimate Weapon Isn't Nuclear Weapons (Think 'Big Guns')

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, Asia* And attacking Seoul would be the goal. But could Kim actually pull it off? *A 2011 study by the Nautilus Institute throws a considerable amount of cold water on this scenario. While the sheer number of artillery tubes could theoretically kill a large number of civilians, operational issues complicate matters and push the number of civilian casualties greatly downward. Despite the thousands of artillery pieces, only 700 heavier guns and rocket launchers, plus the newer 300-millimeter MRLs, have the range to strike Seoul. Only a third would normall... more »

Commentaries, Reactions, And Analysis On Germany's Election Results

Yet more clergy sex scandals hit the Catholic Church

I've hoped against hope, ever since my own crisis of conscience back in 2005, to learn that the Catholic Church has taken meaningful action to clean up its Augean stables of clergy sex problems. Tragically, that hope has been in vain. Many new scandals have rocked the Church over the past few months. It does so because honor is, finally, about defending those noble and worthy things that deserve defending, even if it comes at a high cost. Miscellaneous material to start your week. - Steve Roth points out how extreme concentrations of wealth lead to poor economic and social outcomes: If wealth is consistently more widely dispersed — like it was after WW II — the extra spending that results causes more production. (Why, exactly, do you think producers produce things?) And production produces a surplus — value in, more value out. It’s the ultimate engine of wealth creation. In this little example, we’re talking a trillion dollars a year in additional spending and production. GDP would be 5.5% higher. If you want to cl... more »

Why did Britain go to war in 1914?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 20 hours ago
This is something i had never properly understood. The public reasons were always bunkum. The actual consequences for the British Empire were unforgivable. The road to war itself was mostly driven by Russian mischief making taking full advantage of French enthusiasm to redress 1871, in order to extend Russian interests in Europe and the Balkans. The German posture was purely defensive even though this ultimately meant preemptive action. In the end, the British handled their hand badly and did not forestall the rush to war at the least as was surely possible through strong dip... more »

From the beginning, the Irish provided the manpower to occupy the colonies produced by Great Britain. Irish agriculture was unsustainable in the face of increasing populations and the industrial revolution happened elsewhere to suck up populations there. The extent is surprising and several times larger than the Scots or the English. What truly drove it was Irish serfdom and landowners, Irish or English selling their surplus populations to the colony ships who resold them on as indentured servants.
