*TUESDAY, JUNE 6, 2017Are Trump voters human:* Wouldn't you know it? On last Sunday's Meet the Press, Scott Pruitt misstated a fact. At Slate, Daniel Gross even whacks Chuck Todd. Easy to be hard: GROSS (6/5/17): Environmental Protection Agency Administrator *Scott Pruitt said on Meet the Press on Sunday that “in fact since the fourth quarter of last year to most recently added almost 50,000 jobs in the coal sector. In the month of May alone, almost 7,000 jobs.”* Aside from being ungrammatical, that’s wrong. And it represents a willful misreading of the data from one of the report... more »

Sixty-two percent of students did not agree with or felt indifferent to safe spaces, according to a poll of 1,659 current college students taken by LendEDU, a student loan consolidation and refinancing organization. Was the Rise of ISIS Inevitable?

*A. Trevor Thrall, John Glaser* *Security, Middle East* Or was it the result of misguided U.S. policies? In the latest issue of Survival, Hal Brands and Peter Feaver address an important debate in American foreign policy circles. Was the rise of ISIS inevitable, or was it the result of misguided U.S. policies? Most agree it is the latter, but the dispute gets fraught on the question of whether it was U.S. military interventionism or inaction that deserves the blame. Some say it was the invasion of Iraq that led to the rise of ISIS. Others insist it was Obama’s decision to withdra... more »

Choctaw Nation: The first American native code talkers ever to serve in the US military

White Wolf at White Wolf - 12 hours ago
Nineteen Choctaw men have been documented as being the first to use their own language as a “code” to transmit military messages. During the first world war, with the tapping of the American Army’s phone lines, the Germans were able to learn the location of where the Allied Forces were stationed, as well as where sup-plies were kept. When the Choctaw men were put on the phones and talked in their Native speech, the Germans couldn’t effectively spy on the trans-missions. Native Americans did not receive nationwide citizenship until 1924, yet the Choctaws were both patriotic and vali... more »

Who Can We Trust?

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 12 hours ago
- I saw a person on Fazebook this morning post the question, "Who can we trust?" Someone replied, "Trust no one." I don't agree with that - I can't help but feel that the oligarchies would love for us to wander around the wilderness with a sense of disempowerment that comes from having no mooring and sense of trust. But with that said we've all got to become much more discriminating about which media, politicians, organizations, and even friends that we put our faith in. That can only be done by taking the time and energy to investigate and experience ... more »

Is Jeremy Corbyn antisemitic?

Is Jeremy Corbyn antisemitic? That’s the question that caught my eye in a “Times of Israel” article. Fact: Corbyn and his cronies, and many of his supporters, are a magnet for antisemites. “A few days ago someone, pleading apparent ignorance, asked for evidence of Corbyn’s antisemitism. I and others played a straight bat, giving much documentary proof of how too many of Corbyn’s actions (or lack thereof) and/or his ” friends” either are antisemitic or attract antisemites. As a lifelong atheist and born cynic I have always seen religion - for other people - as a parental substitute and a kind of balm or emollient, giving comfort and offering companionship. Religion can soothe away insecurities and uncertainties and eradicate loneliness. Also, I’ve seen many a happy outcome and even had fleeting feelings of envy. But I also felt that religion could be benign, but is more often malign. Either way religion was f... more »

[image: An artist's reconstruction of Graecopithecus freybergi, left, with the jawbone and tooth found in Bulgaria and Greece ] What we do understand and can plausibly show is that modern humanity arose fully prepped around 200,000 years ago. How3ever we also understand that this meant the augmentation of an extant primate lineage already in place and plausibly long since distributed globally. This conjecture is not necessarily true but it happens to be well supported by cultural records as well, or we would never have actually surmised the possibility. Because we hav... more »

*June 6**, 2017* (Tony Cartalucci - NEO) - With a name like the "National Democratic Institute" (NDI) one might expect the US State Department-funded, corporate-financier chaired front to be the premier proponent of freedom and democracy worldwide. And although it poses as such, it does precisely the opposite. It uses principles like free speech, democracy, press freedom, and human rights as a facade behind which it carries out a politically motivated agenda on behalf of the special interests that fund and direct its activities. The embarrassing conversation that we need to have

I've heard politicians say that we need to have difficult, even embarrassing, conversations about society in order to see how we can counter Islamist terrorism. A comment at isthebbcbiased.blogspot.co.uk http://isthebbcbiased.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/brief-terrorism-round-up.html summed up what the politicians and the BBC should be asking but won't: '"What's in the Koran and do you, UK Muslims, believe it is literally true and that you are obliged to follow its commands?" Clear answers please, no Taqiyya.'

But sometimes, it can shed new light on the problem, make you see it in a whole new way. After all the opinions have been heard and every point of view has been considered, you finally find what you're after - the truth. But the truth isn't where it ends, that's just where you begin again with a whole new set of questions." - Dr. Meredith Grey, "Grey's Anatomy"

We use big data to sentence criminals. But can the algorithms really tell us what we need to know?

Use of data-driven risk assessments in sentencing may be heard by the Supreme Court. Karen Neoh/flickr, CC BY In 2013, a man named Eric L. Loomis was sentenced for eluding police and driving a car without the owner’s consent. When the judge weighed Loomis’ sentence, he considered an array of evidence, including the results of an automated risk assessment tool called COMPAS. Loomis’ COMPAS score indicated he was at a “high risk” of committing new crimes. Considering this prediction, the judge sentenced him to seven years. Loomis challenged his sentence, arguing it was unfair to us... more »
