Your smartphone can't do this – yet. Peter Sobolev via shutterstock.com A smartphone touchscreen is an impressive piece of technology. It displays information and responds to a user’s touch. But as many people know, it’s easy to break key elements of the transparent, electrically conductive layers that make up even the sturdiest rigid touchscreen. If flexible smartphones, e-paper and a new generation of smart watches are to succeed, they can’t use existing touchscreen technology. We’ll need to invent something new – something flexible and durable, in addition to being clear, lightw... more »

Disaster Branding: The Importance of Naming-- Guest Post By George Lakoff

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 hour ago
Donald Trump knows the power of branding and actually make huge profits by selling the use of his name. But the power of naming and branding can be a double-edged sword: when a president creates and perpetuates real human disasters, we can truthfully attach his name to them and allow well-earned disaster branding to spread naturally. Mr. Trump uses the word "disaster" metaphorically for policies and practices he doesn’t like. But there are real, literal disasters in the world: huge fires, devastating, floods, deadly storms, major droughts-- disasters caused systemically by the hea... more »

The U.S. Navy Has the Best Submarines in the World (Largely Thanks to a Terrible Tragedy)

It takes chutzpah to suspend national campaigning and then give a political speech about Saturday night's terror attack. But this is Theresa May and the modern Conservative Party has no qualms when it comes to turning a crisis into an opportunity. Naturally, May and her advisors are wily enough not to play the big P politics card but you have the genesis of a simple, touch-sounding black and white position they will use to browbeat voters into backing them as we enter the final stretch. Hunter-gatherer cultures differed widely in their dependence on technology. The persistence hunters of the Kalahari used almost none, while those inhabiting cold regions required huge survival toolboxes — weatherproof shelters, warm hearths, fur clothing, canoes, specialized weaponry, food storage. In the far north, hunting clans also required dozens of large sled dogs, and feeding them required killing many additional wild animals, all year long. This is article was first posted by Paul Craig Roberts about a month ago. PCR is only one year younger than me, and we both have PhDs after 6 years of postgraduate work, mine in Physics from Brown University and his in Economics from the University of Virginia and two other universities including his final year at Oxford. Most of my research was carried out at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC (1967-2001), where my position description was to carry out self-guided basic research …and by doing so that I accrued 9 national and international honors. More impressively, PCR became US Treasury Department Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy (1981-93) and subsequently held four different Congressional Staff positions (1975-78). Subsequently, he was a Columnist for Business Week and later an Editor of the Wall Street Journal, and he has written many books on the demise of America. My Jan-2001 exit from NRL was mainly to take up unexpected invited professorships of research at the University of Paris 6 & 7, the University of St Etienne in France, and Tokyo Institute of Technology. However, for me there was an additional reason for my early exit from NRL, namely in my final decade instead of producing self-guided research, my superiors demanded that I bring in outside funding for my work (which I did to the tune of $666,000 …although not enough in my boss’s view). Still, whenever members of the military/industrial/security complex (whose average pay was likely twice of mine) came to NRL for help on issues that I had studied, I helped them significantly. In the meantime, I think that sometime around 2000-2001 (maybe c.a. 9/11?) PCR realized that he too must leave his well-paid jobs in order to bring to the masses the evil works of our government before it is too late. To spread the truths that you will never hear from the “presstitute mainstream media”, everyone who reads this post should refer it to several of your friends, who then should then pass it on to some of their friends with the same request, etc. Why? Well, I simply can’t imagine our children and grandchildren perishing with us in a nuclear holocaust, can you? But unless We the People finally learn what is really going on with the insane neocons now commanding our government (camouflaged by fake news), one day too soon we may all be dead.
