We have to talk about Sweden

There have been more modern fairy tales peddled about Sweden than even Hans Christian Andersen could dream up – and I don’t just mean whatever the American president thought he was talking about the other night. The far-off place has become a convenient political talisman for the misinformed of both sides of the statist coin: both left and alt-right. Better to Be Fair Than Fast

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 8 hours ago
Traditionally in Canada very serious criminal cases go to trial only after they have been reviewed by a judicial officer who hears from witnesses and decides there is enough evidence to make a trial necessary. The idea is that someone ought not to be put on trial for a serious case like arson or manslaughter or kidnapping without having an independent judicial officer listen to at least some of the evidence. It also allows the accused to challenge the case before trial and make sure all the evidence is tested. This testing is called a preliminary inquiry. The testing of the case ... more »

Perspectivism, 5 Determinisms And Impossibility Of Defining Free Will, Zen

Sascha Vongehr at Science 2.0 blogs - 14 hours ago
Often, we do not understand because we do not see the issue from the other side. For example, the person who believes in some sort of determinism, the "determinist", wonders why those others, people such as those who believe in ‘free will’, the “free-willers”, make a big deal out of that determinism may be used as an excuse. He exclaims: “Look, determinism does not imply that people stop feeling guilty about their misdeeds and start acting irresponsible. People are just as well determined to believe in ‘free will’.” A determinist naturally looks at what the assumed determinism impli... more »

Zika Linked To Miscarriages, Thin Brain Tissue In Babies

News Staff at Science 2.0 blogs - 14 hours ago
Zika virus can cross the placenta, intended to protect the developing fetus, and appears to lead to a high percentage of miscarriages and to babies born with thin brain tissue and inflammation in brain cells, at least in mice. Mice are not little people, of course, or every disease would have been cured by now and every chemical would be toxic, but it's a starting point for understanding the role of zika in birth defects beyond vague epidemiology. read more

7 Ideas for Teaching Kids Responsibility

Every mom who has ever stepped on a Lego asks themselves what more could they be doing to get their kids to pick up after themselves. I wish there was a magic pill that made kids want to clean up, but so far the best thing I have learned is consistency with these 7 principles. 1. *Age Appropriate Chores* - One of the best ways to teach kids responsibility is to give them responsibility. Make sure the chores are appropriate for their age. Some ideas for toddlers include picking up toys, dusting, clearing their own dinner plate and more.
