Two Deeply Flawed Candidates For U.S. President

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 9 minutes ago
*Stephen Collinson, CNN*: *The hubris of the 2016 candidates* *Washington (CNN)Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are better at beating themselves than each other.* They're not just the most unpopular presidential nominees in recent memory: In the epic drama of the 2016 election, they're also tarnished heroes who are perpetually humbled by their own self-defeating flaws. The rivals, playing out their tragicomic duel on the grandest electoral stage, are like two Shakespearean protagonists falling prey to hubris, the excessive pride that can make a politician believe the rules that go... more »

Early Voting Data Show Trump Winning Election

Sean Adl-Tabatabai at Your News Wire - 10 minutes ago
Latest voting data shows that Donald Trump is not only likely to win Florida by a landslide but also looks set to win the entire election. According to reports, most nationwide polls are underestimating the turnout of Trump supporters on election day: Mitt Romney lost the state of Florida to Obama in 2012 by less than 1% of the vote. (Keep that in mind throughout this post.) Here’s how the vote broke down in a very important and large Florida county (Lee) in 2012 – Romney won the county overall by about 17% (58-41) four years ago. So this is an area that is full of Republican vot... more »

Treason: Clinton Sold State Secrets To Middle East Via Huma Abedin

Sean Adl-Tabatabai at Your News Wire - 10 minutes ago
Hillary Clinton allowed her closest aide Huma Abedin access to highly classified information, which Abedin would have then been able to sell onto Saudi Arabia. According to a protective detail assigned to guard Hillary Clinton and her two residences, Abedin often overrode standard security protocols during trips to the Middle East, and changed procedures for handling classified data, including CIA briefs intended for the president. The highly irregular handing of classified data by Clinton and Abedin is all the more disturbing due to Abedin’s connection to Saudi Arabia and the Mu... more »

WikiLeaks: Obama Is A Saudi Agent

Hacked emails from Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta released by WikiLeaks suggests that Obama may be working on behalf of the Saudi regime. The 2008 email comes from Michael Froman, a former Citibank executive, who told Obama who to appoint in his cabinet team once elected President. Zerohedge.com reports: The email in question was even sent from Froman’s Citibank email address (rookie!) and includes “A list of African American, Latino and Asian American candidates, broken down by Cabinet/Deputy and Under/Assistant/Deputy Assistant level, plus a list of Native American, Ara... more »

National Democrats-- as opposed to reactionary "Manchin Democrats"-- have largely given up on West Virginia. In 2012 not only did Romney beat Obama 412,406 (62%) to 234,925 (36%), one of Obama's worst performances in America, but Romney won every single county in the state. Playing politics with Auckland infrastructure is just what politicians do

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 hour ago
What’s the connection between an Auckland stadium project and today's by-election politicking over light rail (or not) down Dominion Rd? Well, apart from the billions being fought about coming from the same pot (yours and mine) it’s the fact it’s so clear that politicians so readily place politics before sense when it comes to spending (or promising to spend) those billions. It was no more surprising that Phil Goff elected to kick off his mayoral duties by wool-gathering about stadia any more than Labour kicked off this by-election with a $1.4 billion dollar promise they’re in... more »

Quote of the Day: On ‘needs’ v rights

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 hour ago
*“All forms of collectivism in the 20th century rejected the classical liberal notion of rights and all asserted in their own way that need is a claim. For the communists, the needs of the class (proletariat) were a claim against every individual. For the Nazis, the needs of the race were a claim. For fascists (Italian-style) and for architects of the welfare state, the needs of society as a whole were a claim. Since in all these systems the state is the personification of the class, the race, society as a whole, etc., all these ideologies imply that, to one degree or another, ... more »

Scientists Say Universe Is Part Of 4th Dimension Born From Black Hole

Edmondo Burr at Your News Wire - 10 hours ago
A new scientific theory claims our universe was born from an Event Horizon event as part of a second dimension in an enormous black hole gobbling up other universes in the fourth dimension. At the very beginning of time, around 13.8 billion years ago, there was a hot dense energetic point where the laws of physics did not apply – something scientists today refer to as a ‘singularity’. The only other place where a singularity occurs in the Universe and all the known laws of physics are temporarily abandoned is at the event horizon of a black hole – which scientists cannot explain. Ancient Egyptian Coin Proves Aliens Visited Earth

Edmondo Burr at Your News Wire - 10 hours ago
The discovery of an ancient coin in an Egyptian house which depicts an alien-like creature is proof that UFOs and aliens have visited earth during its history, according to UFO researchers. Researchers have found numerous coins in the past that depict ‘flying objects’, but a discovery like the one posted below seems to offer more concrete proof that we have indeed been visiting by aliens – tens of thousands of years ago. Ancient Code reports: A newly found coin –which by the way has all the right ingredients for being called out as a fake— has woken interest among skeptics and UFO... more »

*Reuters:* *Iraqi Shi'ite commander says Mosul battle 'no picnic' as troops advance* Iraqi troops and security forces edged closer to Mosul on two southern fronts on Sunday but a leader of the Shi'ite militias newly participating in the offensive warned that the battle for Islamic State's Iraq stronghold would be long and grueling. A military statement said the army's Ninth Armoured Division raised the Iraqi flag in the village of Ali Rash, about 7 km (4 miles) southeast of Mosul, after recapturing it from the ultra-hardline Sunni Muslim militants. DiCaprio new climate movie is truly pathetic

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 11 hours ago
Hours ago, National Geographic released the new 95-minute-long movie "Before the Flood" created by Leonardo DiCaprio on their YouTube channel: DiCaprio is facing trouble because they caught him when he was misappropriating a rainforest fund in an international money laundering scandal so he surely hopes that this movie will help him to decriminalize himself. It's probably the most superficial movie on the climate issue that has been released so far, beating even No Pressure 10:10, An Inconvenient Truth, The Times of the Stupid, 2055, and many other "masterpieces". It's been a downbeat election cycle and the *NY Times*' down-ballot endorsements yesterday reflect it. The highlight was an endorsement of Zephyr Teachout-- kind of a no-brainer compared to John Faso, a crooked lobbyist propped up by modern-day robber baron hedge fund managers Paul Singer and Robert Mercer. "Ms. Teachout," wrote the editorial board dryly, "is the better candidate for this era of gridlock and disillusionment. She promises to be the strong voice for change in Washington that so many angry voters are demanding." Yes, she does. But the *Times* headlined their column o... more »

Electoral News

For the last few months I have been focusing on Electoral Reform here at Democracy Under Fire and in order to 'keep up' have a Google Alert set to give me the headlines on this subject each day. Generally they are just 'more of the same' with one side whining about *having a referendum* and the other saying there can be no choice but a 'proportional' system. Yesterday there were a couple of items with a little different spin that got my attention, I am not going to attempt to summarize them here or comment (much) on them but simply provide a brief clip and a link to the original art... more »

WikiLeaks: Podesta Had Disturbing ‘Beyond Discipline’ Plan For Leakers

Baxter Dmitry at Your News Wire - 17 hours ago
A new WikiLeaks email from John Podesta’s account reveals the Clinton campaign manager was worried about internal leaks and plotted to “make an example of a suspected leaker” by punishing them with “beyond internal discipline” – whether or not there was “any real basis for it.“ Responding to an email from John Benenson about a “damaging” leak, Podesta wrote, “I generally agree with the point, but we need a strategy on this that goes beyond internal discipline.“ As well as exposing the Clinton camp as the kind of organization that punishes people based on suspicion alone, the quest... more »

Donald Trump knows how to play people for suckers. That talent -- if you can call it that -- has been on display throughout his presidential campaign. The latest example is FBI Director James Comey. Frank Bruni writes in the *New York Times*: How strange but how fitting. This entire election is being conducted in the key of hysteria, and Comey just found a way to amplify that ugly music. Listen, Clinton made an awful decision in setting up a private email server, then compounded that error by dragging her feet through defensive non-apologies that gave the story such legs. In Taichung the new elevated train lines with the new train stations were just completed. The Taichung station is the particular subject of complaints. The new station has only one escalator in each section going up and down -- in the morning these are packed, slowing everyone down. In the old Taichung station the tracks were at street level, and it was possible to run to make a train. Now you have to climb stairs. People are reporting they have to leave much earlier in the morning, and navigation in the new station is difficult. The new stations are also demonstrating the usual s... more »

Glaciers of the Bolivian Andes receded by 43% between 1986 and 2014 according to the findings of a new study. Rising temperatures in the Andes have left people living at high altitudes with a water crisis. The study was published in The Cryosphere, an European Geosciences Union journal. “On top of that, glacier recession is leaving lakes that could burst and wash away villages or infrastructure downstream,” says lead-author Simon Cook, a lecturer at the Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK. European Geosciences Union reports: Receding glaciers also put water supply in the ...more »

Evil Mum Kept Young Son In Closets For 3 Years Before He Died

Edmondo Burr at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
An evil Mother kept her 11-year-old son locked up in tiny closets for three years sedating him with liquid sleeping aids before he died. The badly beaten and emaciated body of Yonatan Daniel Aguilar, 11, was found in his mother’s home in Los Angeles earlier this year. The LA Times reports: When people asked Veronica Aguilar where her son was, she told them he had been placed in an institution in Mexico, according to court records. Only her three other children — two of whom slept on a bed just outside the closet door — knew the truth, and they said they were forbidden by their moth... more »

Bits & Pieces from the Peace Walk

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
- I've still yet to recover from the peace walk. Sore legs and low energy. Others I've spoken with have similar ailments. When I went to the chiropractor yesterday he found one leg was 1/2 inch shorter than the other which indicates my body was really out of whack. - Yesterday I worked on the walk budget report and it appears after all bills are paid we will have just over $800 left. That would not have been possible without substantial in-kind donations from several of the walkers. My considerable staff time spent on the walk essentially donated ...more »

The next such reports will be on November 5 and 19, 2016. I will update the weekly Hiroshima bomb equivalents information. Damned if He Does, Damned if He Doesn't

jurassicpork at Welcome Back to Pottersville - 1 day ago
Poor James Comey. Right about now, he must feel like a circus animal tamer with his head in a lion's mouth while a tiger's teeth is buried in his ass. Now he's in a damned if he does, damned if he doesn't situation. And I'm sure the FBI Director can tell you all about both ends of that equation. It came out yesterday that Comey was taking it upon himself to reopen the Hillary Clinton email investigation, with many Trump and Bernie/Jill supporters hoping he gets it right this time. This came about because of the bombshell discovery at the Bureau that emails from Hillary... more »

The Battle for our Grasslands and Livestock

Geoff Brown at The Australian Climate Sceptics Blog - 1 day ago
*By Viv Forbes, Albrecht Glatzle and others* *Any quotes below may be attributed to Viv Forbes*Grasslands and arable land cover just 10% of Earth’s surface but (with the oceans) they produce all of our food and fibre. But the productivity and health of our grasslands, farms and livestock are under threat from global warming alarmists and green preservationists. We are afflicted by climate crazies and methane madness. It is poor public policy that condones restrictions on grazing operations, or taxes on grazing animals, based on disputed theories that claim that bodily emissions fr... more »

what i'm reading: the underground railroad by colson whitehead

laura k at wmtc - 1 day ago
Colson Whitehead is a literary genius. In *The Underground Railroad*, he has found a way to tell the story of 400-plus years of African-American oppression without delivering an awkward march through history, and without using characters as billboards for ideas. Instead of linear time, Whitehead employs a geography of time: different eras, different historical moments, occur simultaneously but in different places, all the locations connected by an underground railroad. At one stop is something very like the Tuskegee Experiment and the "Mississippi appendectomy". At another stop, mi... more »

Maddow May Not Get It, But Supporting Progressives Like Russ Feingold And Zephyr Teachout Isn't The Same As Backing ConservaDems Like Patrick Murphy And Pete Gallego

Early voting has started and, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, Hillary leads Trump by a whopping 15 points among the 19 million Americans who have already cast their ballots-- leading not just in blue states but in Ohio, Arizona and, yes, even Texas. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are out on the road, working their asses off for Democratic candidates-- and although they've been smart enough and shown enough integrity to avoid pimping the worst of the Democratic establishment monstrosities (like Evan Bayh, Patty Justice, Ann Kirkpatrick and, worst of all, Patrick Murphy, who... more »

Oct. 29: Monton's wealthy admitted to hall of fame. clap, clap, clap

Graeme Decarie at The Decarie Report - 1 day ago
The irving press is its usual, sloppy and ill-informed self. The headline says that the leader of New Brunswick's 'leading literacy program for children' is outraged by falling literacy scores at the grade 2 level. "Leading literacy program"? In fact, this is a volunteer group - and a worthy one - but what makes it the leading literacy program? Does it have more expertise than the education system has? And just how many literacy programmes are we comparing this to? And why be shocked at the drop in literacy? This is a province which really doesn't give much of a damn about liter... more »

Hugh Sykes on 'Regrexit'

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
We've not had a tweet from BBC tweeter Hugh Sykes for a while. Here's one of his latest (so good he sent it twice): He tweets elsewhere, "But I know many people who now believe they were lied to by #Leave much more than by #Remain, & want to reconsider". (Wishful thinking on Hugh's part there most likely.)

U.S. Undermining ISIS Fight To Get A Foothold In Syria

Carol Adl at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
The Pentagon’s plan to launch an offensive against ISIS in Syria is only aimed at undermining a successful attempt by the Syrian government and its allies to defeat the terror group, according to American political commentator James Petras. Petras says the US is desperately seeking to gain a foothold in Syria. US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter told NBC News on Wednesday that the Pentagon is laying the groundwork for an offensive to oust ISIS from the Syrian city of Raqqa, the terror group’s de facto capital in the country. Carter said the operation would start within weeks and Ru... more »

Clinton Campaign Responds To DAPL Protests Saying A Lot Of Nothing

Edmondo Burr at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
Protesters have been calling for Hillary Clinton to take a stand on the controversial pipeline for months. As the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) protests heat up and militarized police forcibly remove hundreds of water protectors from the protest site, Clinton’s campaign finally responded by saying ‘pretty much nothing’ about the volatile dispute. Common Dreams reports: The statement was delivered via email to a handful of Indigenous journalists and news outlets and was said to be in response to a letter that Native leaders had sent to the former secretary of state asking for her h... more »

*AFP:* *Russian, US jets had near miss over Syria: US officials* Aboard a US military aircraft (AFP) - A Russian fighter flew dangerously close to a US warplane over eastern Syria, US defence officials said Friday, highlighting the risks of a serious mishap in the increasingly crowded airspace. The "near miss" occurred late on October 17, when a Russian jet that was escorting a larger spy plane manoeuvred near an American warplane, Air Force Lieutenant General Jeff Harrigian said. The Russian jet came to "inside of half a mile" of the US jet, he added. Another US military officia... more »

Scientists Say Melanesians Carry DNA Of Unknown Species

People from Melanesia contain traces of DNA belonging to an unknown species, according to an exciting new computer analysis. Scientists say that Melanesians, people from a region in the South Pacific, contain DNA of an unknown human species in their genetic makeup. Ryan Bohlender told the annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics that the DNA was very unlikely to be Neanderthal or Denisovan – but is likely a third, unknown “human” relative. Sciencealert.com reports: “We’re missing a population, or we’re misunderstanding something about the relationships,” Ryan Bohl... more »

2006 Audio Captures Clinton Proposing To Rig Palestinian Election

Carol Adl at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
Hillary Clinton proposed rigging the Palestinian parliamentary elections while she was a US senator in 2006, according to a newly emerged recording. The decade-old audio exposes then-Senator Hillary Clinton saying the US should have manipulated Palestinian parliamentary elections in 2006 to prevent a Hamas victory. The US Democratic presidential nominee lamented that the US didn’t “determine who was going to win.” The result of that election was a victory for the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas over the US-favored Fatah political party. RT reports: “I do not think we should ...more »
