If The DCCC Continues Boycotting Progressives And Sabotaging Their Campaigns, Why Play Along With "Party Unity?"

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 37 minutes ago
On April 26, Pennsylvania held their presidential and congressional primaries. One of the hottest Democratic primaries was in the extreme southeast of the state, PA-07-- parts of Delaware, Chester, Montgomery and Berks counties, Joe Sestak's old district, currently held by 3-term, garden variety Republican Pat Meehan. Early in the cycle, the DCCC identified it as a must-win district if the Democrats were to stand any chance whatsoever of taking back the House *this decade*. Obama had beaten McCain there in 2008-- 53-46%-- and Joe Sestak had defeated entrenched GOP incumbent, Curt ... more »

Film Review: Ghostbusters (2016)

Daniel Stack at 19th Level - 2 hours ago
"I guess he's going to Queens - he's going to be the third scariest thing on that train." I'm not certain why but the reboot of *Ghostbusters* is a bit of a target for people who like using terms like "feminist SJW". So I'll air my own prejudices - I'm probably what most people who hate "social justice warriors" would consider a "social justice warrior". With that out of the way, how was the film? I'll put it in the category of a lot of fun but not a masterpiece. It has some tough competition - the 1984 *Ghostbusters *is a comic masterpiece and it is difficult to conceive of a pi... more »

Islamic State’s Highway of Death In Iraq’s Anbar

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 3 hours ago
At the end of June 2016 just as the battle for Fallujah had concluded a huge group of Islamic State fighters and their families tried to make a break out. Over 700 vehicles might have taken part. This was quickly discovered by the Iraqis and U.S.-led Coalition, which set about destroying it over two days. That was about all that was agreed upon as the Iraqis and Americans gave different accounts of what happened and who was responsible. The initial reports of the attack upon the Islamic State convoy in Anbar were a bit confused and excluded any involvement of the U.S.-led Coalitio... more »

With The Selection Of Mike Pence For VP, Republicans Have Now Checked All The Hate Boxes

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 3 hours ago
*- by Noah* I knew this was coming. As the speculation as to which wackjob of the vast, seemingly infinite list of possible Republican running mates Herr Trumpf would consider for a running mate grew, the choice of Indiana Governor Mike Pence was all too obvious. Why? The answer is simple. Traditionally, candidates for president pick either a running mate from a state where that pick can help win that state, or, if not that, they pick a candidate who has a strong reputation in an area where the presidential candidate is a little lacking. In this case, Trump was demonstrably week ... more »

What is Happening to the Labour Party?

Or, to be more accurate, what's happening to politics in general? The times they are a changin', and things are happening so fast that it's difficult to keep up. This week we've had a new PM, the ruthless purging of the Cameroons, two Labour leadership challenges (including one as I write this), the drama of *that* NEC meeting, the draconian rules on voting eligibility, and two legal challenges. Compounding the sense of chaos were the horrors of Nice and the failed Turkish coup - both awful events that will reverberate for years to come. Turkey, where the lines are now drawn

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 4 hours ago
[image: PhilMyth] In Turkey over the weekend there was a military coup against the democratically-elected leader. Naturally, there was a knee-jerk reaction around the west to oppose the coup, and uphold the democratically-elected leader. But in a country where the majority votes Islamist, this would be a mistake. In country likes this, democracy can beome almost wholly the lethal description of it: like three wolves and a sheep voting for dinner – with the Islamists ready to tuck in. This figure is up from “the end of December, [when] Reserve banks figures indicated New Zealand homes were worth a combined $873 billion.” That’s a six-percent year-on-year price inflation. We will soon know if Apple is ordered to pay billions in EU state aid case

$19 billion? $8 billion? A few hundred million? Estimates are all over the map regarding the European Commission's imminent decision on whether Apple received illegal, unnotified state aid (subsidies) from Ireland. As I mentioned two years ago, two factors go into the Commission's claim: Ireland's creation of a corporate entity that is taxable nowhere, and the possibility that the company negotiated a tax rate far below the country's already-low 12.5% corporate income tax rate. As you may remember from earlier posts, if the Commission rules against Apple, the sanction it will impose... more »

What's going on? Florin Moldoveanu wrote another hodgepodge of mathematical definitions pretending to be relevant for physics, What is Noncommutative Geometry? As far as I can say, he does a much worse job in conveying the basic meaning or definition of noncommutative geometry than the first paragraphs of even the mediocre introductions to the subject. Look what Brian Tau of the *WSJ* found when he was at the GOP convention in Cleveland today: You got it: Segregated elevators. Word has it that party bosses are scrambling like hookers on Two-For-One Night taking down these racist signs. They and the Trump campaign are also, as does everyone these days, refusing to comment to the media. Controversial internet celebrity Qandeel Baloch has been killed by her own brother in an apparent ‘honor killing’ in the Punjab prov... more »

Follow-up on the imminent threat to the fabled Waldorf=Astoria public spaces

One of the items on today's *From Our Own Correspondent *began with a telling (though doubtless unconscious) admission from Kate Adie: In 60 years this programme has broadcast many dispatches from the Middle East, *particularly the West Bank*. The BBC's obsession has been well-documented in recent years but it's good to see it admitted at last. The report from Ed Lewis (a piece about a rock-climbing club in Ramallah) began, inevitably, like this: Ramallah has a new wall. Not a vertical grey concrete wall but a bright blue, green and white one. It has no look-out posts, razor wir... more »

UNESCO declares Islam as the most peaceful religion of the world

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 1 day ago
I think this is satire but with the United Nations you can't be certain. 'In a major development that should silence critics of Islam who have been blaming it for terrorism, UNESCO has declared that Islam is the most peaceful religion of the world. The United Nations body released a statement earlier today that revealed that UNESCO had partnered with International Peace Foundation six months back to study all religions of the world and find out which was most peaceful amongst all. "After six months of rigorous study and analysis, we have concluded that Islam is the most peaceful... more »

China has set a new world record for trains passing one another at speed. Two Chinese bullet trains, each travelling at 420 km per hour along parallel tracks in opposite directions, successfully passed within 1.6 meters of each other during a test run in central China on Friday. RT reports: Two bullet trains were tested at the same time in an effort to prove the quality of China’s high speed trains. The test took place in Zhengzhou, central China. The trains, known as Golden Phoenix and Dolphin Blue zipped past each other with only 1.6 meters of space between them. Watch: China tes... more »

Gavin Esler on Boris's "silly" and "juvenile" poem

More Boris, and more Gavin Esler... Here's a question Gavin put to Turkish journalist Guney Yildez on today's *Dateline London*: Guney, I just wondered how...He wrote a pretty juvenile poem which won a prize which said things about President Erdogan which, I think, on reflection he might think are rather silly. I mean, does that matter to people in Turkey? Let's just recall that Boris's winning poem was *meant *to be juvenile. That's what Douglas Murray of the *Spectator *specifically asked for - and he *didn't *ask for it for childish reasons. He was being deadly serious. It w... more »

Turkey Halts All US Operations Against ISIS From Incirlik Airbase

Movement in and out of the Incirlik airbase in the South of Turkey has been blocked by military authorities following the failed Turkish coup. U.S. military operations out of Turkey’s Incirlik Air Base came to a halt on Saturday afternoon as the Turkish military closed the airspace around the base and suspended all US-led operations targeting ISIS. A message from the the US consulate in Adana said: “Local authorities are denying movements on to and off of Incirlik Air Base. The power there has also been cut” “Please avoid the air base until normal operations have been restored,” it a... more »

I'm listening to BBC Radio 3 now and even they are slagging off Boris. (It's "Boris", "Boris", "Boris" at the moment, isn't it?) His appointment* isn't *a good thing, apparently - at least according to the presenter and 'talking head' on Radio 3. Oh, sorry, it's Mussorgsky's *Boris Godunov* (one of my favourite operas) they are talking about. And that 'talking head' is Antonio Pappano. And Bryn Terfel is singing Boris. (And what's with the funny blond wig, Bryn?) That's nice. Here's the famous 'Coronation of Theresa May Scene':

ISIS Burns Alive 5 Civilians On Treason Charges

An ISIS village court in the Tal Abta region of Nineveh province in Iraq sentenced five civilians to death on charges of treason. The militant court carried out the sentence using the gruesome execution method of burning alive the convicts into ashes within an iron cage. The militants claim to represent Islam belonging to 1.6 billion Muslims around the world while releasing macabre images of human suffering and death. Not Tom Watson By Thursday night's *Newsnight* we were getting the following from Evan Davis: For our European colleagues the British situation raises all sorts of questions - not always very welcome ones. And now they find themselves working with a foreign secretary who has, over the years, treated the EU with derision. A little earlier I spoke to the Lithuanian foreign secretary, Linas Linkevicius. What does he think of Boris Johnson's past indiscretions? And will they make it difficult to take him or British foreign policy seriously? It's the same question - and tone - as G... more »

The strategy of the fly

Alison at Creekside - 1 day ago
"A terrorist is like a fly that wants to destroy a china shop. Small, low, fly is unable to move not even a cup. So she found an elephant, enters his ear and buzzes until mad with fear and anger, it sacked the shop. Thus, for example, the Al-Qaeda fly led the American elephant to destroy the china shop of the Middle East. Why are they so sensitive to terrorist provocations? Because the legitimacy of the modern state is based on its promise to keep the public sphere free of political violence. A regime can withstand terrible catastrophes, and even ignore them, provided its legitimacy... more »

Tony Clement wants to be leader of the Conservative Party. Perhaps he believes that the third time will be the charm. But, Bob Hepburn writes, there are five reasons Clement should reconsider his bid: First, Clement deservedly earned the title of “The King of Pork-Barrel Politics” for his disgraceful role in doling out $50 million in special projects in his riding that were to be related to the 2010 G8 summit in Huntsville. Instead, most of the money went to totally unrelated projects far from the summit site, such as renovating bandshells and gazebos, planting flowers, repairing ... more »
