Molly's Kitchen Sink Writing Problem

mollymew at Molly'sBlog - 1 minute ago
*MOTOR MOUTH OF THE PEN:* Well it's back to blogging, and my old problem remains - motor mouth of the pen. I've always had a tendency to 'kitchen sink' anything I write. The old 'and another thing and another thing and another thing' habits refuse to die. I've begun to write reviews of books that I've been reading. Production, however, is miniscule. I've had a review of 'Pierre-Joseph Proudhon', one of George Woodcock's many biographies on the burner for some days now, but it's a dish that keeps cooking but never seems to be done. It's been decades since I first read the book,... more »

Every editorial cartoon I've ever done has been submitted for free to our 3 local publications (in Humbolt County). None were ever published locally. Because of the Comic Show at the Sewell Gallery on display this month in Eureka and the execution of several cartoonists in France, the North Coast Journal requested I do a comic about the event, so apparently I will finally be published locally in that rag this week! Neo-Slavery Makes Comeback

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 50 minutes ago
For-profit prisons have created a “neo-slavery” in the US, according to award-winning journalist Chris Hedges. Inmates work eight hours per day for major corporations such as Chevron, Motorola, Nordstrom’s and Target, yet only have the possibility of making up $1.25 an hour. In addition, companies that provide services like phone calls overcharge prisoners on even the most basic services, making hundreds of millions in profits annually. RT’s Ben Swann speaks to Hedges, who explains how this shadowy system came into existence.

For every single person teaching the doctrine of non violence we have a hundred calling for violence in a hundred subtle ways. The opponent must always be forced to make the first move in the face of superior force or back down in humiliation. Thus lovers of violence consistently learn humiliation and defe... more »

Scientists Zero in on How Lung Cancer Spreads

What amazes me is that we did not observe this a long time ago. Lack of connectivity is apparent in all cancers generally as well. That is why they look different in the first place. They all lose something and it applies to structure and thus connectivity. This will obviously assist in developing treatments. So in its own way it is more good news on the cancer front. Restoring this function may actually surprise us. Is it possible that we are dealing with a biological efficiency? That would certainly explain the observed disease profile. I suspect that we are dealing wit... more »

From Dr Michael Hurd’s article ‘What the Terrorist War Against “the West” Really Means’: The “West” does not refer primarily to a geographic region, and it’s obviously not limited to the United States. Faulkner Yesterday Diane Ravitch gave space for Peter Greene and Catherine Gewertz to have their say on Common Core proficiency targets, which have been arbitrarily adjusted to match the impossibly high proficiency targets of NAEP. I am wondering why Ravitch, instead of remaining mum on her intricate knowledge of the history of cut scores for big testing, does not explain it for us, as she began to do in a review of Waiting for Superman in 2010: I served as a member of the governing board for the national tests for seven years, ... more »

What do we truly control?...

Adrienne at Adrienne's Corner - 9 hours ago
*my recent thinking on this is - not much.* Everyday we are assaulted through news sources, both mainstream and alternative, about all the goings on in the world. I would contend that close to 100% of what is going on is stuff we have absolutely no control over. And yet many of us (you may call me guilty) spend untold hours perusing all these sources as though our lives depended on knowing everything, down to and including what our favorite entertainers had for breakfast. [image: Halifax class FFG]A lack of funding has forced Canada’s navy to take an unusual approach to finding savings — it has sent its frigates out on international missions with instructions to crews not to use some of the ships’ sophisticated sensors. Those restrictions have helped cut back on maintenance bills but also limit the ships’ effectiveness, according to a Department of National Defence evaluation of the navy.
