The oval-shaped surface, touching the event horizon at the poles, is the outer boundary of the ergosphere. Does only NATO, and not Russia, enjoy the right to send weapons to Ukraine?

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 8 minutes ago
In the last week, after a decision from the previous Friday, a ceasefire regime was established in Ukraine. People are still killing each other in the Donetsk Region but the shooting may be interpreted as "sporadic" which is why both sides of the civil war continue to officially respect the ceasefire. While these advances towards peace are promising and all ethical people in the world should want the de-escalation of the situation to continue, some warmongers and lunatics in the EU and Washington D.C. have introduced new sanctions against Russia exactly during these promising days –... more »

"How fast can a black hole spin? If any object made of regular matter spins too fast- it breaks apart. But a black hole might not be able to break apart- and its maximum spin rate is really unknown. Theorists usually model rapidly rotating black holes with the Kerr solution to Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which predicts several amazing and unusual things. Perhaps its most easily testable prediction, though, is that matter entering a maximally rotating black hole should be last seen orbiting at near the speed of light, as seen from far away. *Click image for larger size.*... more »

Nato describes Russia and Islamic State as main threats

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 2 hours ago
[image: NATO flag]Nato has described Russia and Islamic State (IS) as the main threats to Western security, but says it can still talk to Russia despite its invasion of Ukraine. Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen likened Russia to IS in a speech at the Carnegie Europe think tank in Brussels on Monday (15 September). He said: “Russia considers Nato, and the West more broadly, as an adversary. Russia has trampled all the rules and commitments that have kept peace in Europe and beyond since the end of the Cold War … from Moldova to Georgia, and now in Ukraine, Russia has use... more »

Let's remember one thing as the Obama war machine gears up to attack Syria based on the pretext of fighting the terrorist group ISIS. As so many great commentators have pointed out over the years, from Dr. Paul Craig Roberts to Aaron Russo (RIP), the war on terror is, always has been, and always will be a racket. The U.S. wants to police the Middle East until the end of time, and pose as tough-on-crime, but in order to sell that to the world they first have to create the crime. So far they have been unsuccessful, but, as they say, if at first you don't succeed, try, and try again. Persistence and patience are what ultimately lead to victory. Was working on the peace walk route some more again today. Still have two nights with no place for walkers to lay their heads. One church turned us down because the pastor was reluctant to take it to their congregation due to the political nature of the event. Peace is so political. I could not help but think of things like: - Thou shalt not kill - They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. - But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: bu... more »

It is clear that the USA has abandoned its so called war on drugs. This has opened the door to others who have held back as the USA could simply make the price too rich for many. That has obviously ended. Now we have a clear international movement to assemble a global consensus to implement a more rational system and we can be sure that it will not be restricted to marijuana, nor should it ever be as the same problems accrue to all including some so called foodstuffs. As observed, we actually know how to do this. In fact the changes are happening much faster than i had antici... more »

Hundreds of Methane Plumes Erupting Along East Coast

[image: Hundreds of Methane Plumes Erupting Along East Coast] This does not appear to be unusual but it was apparently unexpected but are now discovered and may still lead to something useful. What it does make clear is that this methane does seep extensively along the expected horizon even if the bulk is frozen solid. This may also provide accessible natural gas reservoirs that will be close to surface. However it is likely pressure would be a problem and significant natural storage could be impossible. *Hundreds of Methane Plumes Erupting Along East Coast * *By Becky Oski... more »

Do All Languages Derive from a Single Common Ancestor?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
[image: pieter_bruegel_the_elder_the_tower_of_babel_vienna] We have some reason to think that there was a common language maintained by mind sharing. There is no other way in which it could be maintained. So barring that option all natural language arises naturally and sorts itself out. Face to face sharing soon sorts out preferences. This naturally produces geographically disparate threads and an evolutionary process with ample strangeness. Today our common mind is the internet and English. Thus English is converging on a pattern of accepted usage rather noticeably. ... more »

The U.S. National Debt Has Grown By More Than A Trillion Dollars In The Last 12 Months

Mark Daniels at Global Political Awakening - 19 hours ago
Michael Snyder The idea that the Obama administration has the budget deficit under control is a complete and total lie. According to the U.S. Treasury, the federal government has officially run a deficit of 589 billion dollars for the first 11 months of fiscal year 2014. But this number is just for public consumption and it relies on accounting tricks which massively understate how much debt is actually being accumulated. If you want to know what the real budget deficit is, all you have to do is go to a U.S. Treasury website which calculates the U.S. national debt to the penny. ...more »

How Wearable Smart Tech Will Control Your Life

Aaron Dykes and Melissa Melton Privacy? What’s that? IF you take your cues from propaganda outlets like TIME, wearable technology is what’s next in our lives and in a big way. Simply carrying around a cellphone — which is really a complicated mini-computer in and of itself — won’t be fashionable or sensible for much longer. As the likes of futurist Ray Kurzweil and others have long been predicting, wearable wrist-watch and eyeglass style wi-fi units (and eventually implantables) will be the new mediary between “Us” and “The Net.” From lulling us to sleep to waking us up, monitori... more »

Hubris Is Alive And Well

Some economists saw the Great Recession coming. Certainly Robert Reich did. But, as Paul Krugman writes in this morning's *New York Times*, an army of economists missed the boat. They did so for a number of reasons: Clearly, economics as a discipline went badly astray in the years — actually decades — leading up to the crisis. But the failings of economics were greatly aggravated by the sins of economists, who far too often let partisanship or personal self-aggrandizement trump their professionalism. Last but not least, economic policy makers systematically chose to hear only what... more »

[image: Soryu class SSK]Former senior Japanese military personnel have spoken out for the first time against the submarine deal the Abbott Government hopes to conclude with Japan. Australia is considering buying 10 state-of-the-art Soryu class submarines from Japan, at a reported price of more than $20 billion. But Japanese military insiders have warned that it will cost much more. They told the ABC there was great reluctance within the Japanese military to share their expertise, and said it would take Australia decades to perfect the submarines' top secret technology. Recent stories on California cities that are divesting themselves of federally provided surplus military equipment are more of an anomaly than a trend. While San Jose and Davis may be dumping battlefield designed mini-tanks, the San Diego School District cops are pretty damned proud of their brand spanking new MRAP (Mine Resistant Armor Protected) vehicle. The U.S. government's 1033 Program has been drawing plenty of belated criticism in the aftermath of the militarized police response to unrest in Ferguson, MO, but it is still providing military grade equipment to civilian agenci... more »

This Week Obama Washed His Hands to Seal Doomed Democrats Fate

Donn Marten at Carrying a Flag - 1 day ago
Some will see it as the final betrayal of a political Judas. Others, in particular those who have been drinking the toxic brew of hope and change flavored Kool Aid will cheer it. Wednesday night, in a much trumpeted and ballyhooed speech to the nation, President Barack Obama announced that he is now committing the United States to another war in a never ending series of which have driven the country towards moral and financial bankruptcy. He also washed his hands to seal the fate of the Democrats who are on the brink of an electoral wipe out on the first Tuesday in November. Rather... more »

Ten years ago a Reagan Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and a Democrat Senator published an op-ed piece in the New York Times entitled "Second Thoughts on Free Trade" ...causing a sensation. The liberal think-tank Brookings Institution organized a conference -- televised by C-Span -- for these two to explain, or perhaps defend, their heretical position. But this improbable duo dominated the conference, and the Reagan Republican, in response to a question, predicted that due to US jobs off-shoring "In 20 years the US will be a Third World country." However, he was too optimistic. Now he concedes that the US has become a Third World country in just 10 years!

Desperate and Doomed Democrats Launch Jihad Against NFL Commissioner

Donn Marten at Carrying a Flag - 1 day ago
Not only have the Democ*rats* in Congress hit bottom but they have now set up a drilling rig to further plumb the depths. The jackass party - which apparently has nothing serious to devote their time to - is now going after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. This latest stunt by Democ*rats* is an obvious extension of the phony controversy over the Washington Redskins team name. Both are blatant cases of trolling for identity group based emotions in an election year. This new Democ*rat* dog and pony show capitalizes on that recently released video former Baltimore Ravens running back ...more »

Will America's War Against The Islamic State Threaten Future Pentagon Budget Cuts?

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 1 day ago
Wikipedia *Cuts To Defense Budget Threatened By Battle Against Islamic State -- L.A. Times* Members of Congress and the White House anticipated a peace dividend by winding down America's foreign wars, closing bases and shedding tens of thousands of troops. But President Obama's new, open-ended strategy to confront Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria is likely to eat into some of the nearly $500 billion in Pentagon spending cuts that were planned over the next decade. The first five weeks of U.S. airstrikes in northern Iraq has cost $262.5 million, according to the Pentagon, ... more »

A New Constitutional Settlement for England

Phil at All That Is Solid ... - 1 day ago
We could well be days away from ending the 307 year old union between Scotland, and England and Wales. This penny has finally dropped with establishment politics. They have looked into the abyss and are terrified that irrelevance could be staring right back at them. Characteristically, their attempt to ward of the spectre has been threat and promise. The former has been the gift of Scottish financial institutions this week, pledging to move headquarters down to London in the event of a Yes vote. Particularly amusing was Deutsche Bank's David Folkert-Landau warning that Scottish ind... more »

With sufficiently cheap energy, pollution would become a thing of the past; at current levels of energy usage, this is impractical.  Most of our species is still locked in the subsistence-agriculture trap, and simply extending the First World system of coal- and petroleum-fueled industrialism to them would probably destroy the planet. This knowledge is the specter at the feast of progress,
