The Jordanian Women’s Union, along with lawyers across the Hashemite Kingdom, expressed shock last week after a ruling discriminating against women who do not wear the Islamic hijab was issued by the Amman Sharia Court of Appeal, according to Al Medanah News. The court announced late last week that it agreed with one lawyer’s statement – based on a fatwa – that says a woman who does not cover up or wear a hijab is considered a “slut” and shouldn’t be allowed to testify in court. In response, The Women’s Union released a statement published on Amman netthat describes the court’s deci...more »

*The Noah film is afloat with Greenie extremism* AMAZING. Hollywood just killed God, and almost no critic noticed how it quietly slipped a green human-hater in his place. I never thought you could make a two-hour film about Noah and his ark without mentioning “God” even once, but director Darren Aronofsky has managed it in his $142 million epic, which opened last week. His Noah, played by a muttering Russell Crowe, prays to a different deity, a much nastier one called “the creator” who seems to brood on global warming. Hey, what a coincidence! So does Aronofsky, who last year decl... more »

The UN does not like to acknowledge uncomfortable facts about the devastation in Kessab and is totally ignoring what is going on in northern Syria where Jihadist terrorist gangs and bloodthirsty foreign mercenaries are destroying churches, targeting minorities, forcing women to accept repressive dress codes, and generally causing misery, all under the military protection of Turkey and the political protection of Washington. I went shopping today, and it made me really happy. Is that wrong? I wouldn't care anyway, that was how good it felt. As much as I tried to pretend it wasn't so, Honduras was not a shopping mecca. I struggled with both the styles and the fabrics, and the shape of the clothes just isn't cut for broad-backed, big-shouldered Canadian girls. Victims Bill of Rights

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 7 hours ago
I have read Bill C-32 and there is really nothing very new in it. Most of what it suggests - keeping complainants apprised of how a case is going, taking their views into account in plea negotiations, helping vulnerable witnesses give testimony - is already done. What's more most of the language of the legislation is discretionary - it really does not require anything very much to be done except to give information an to listen. Now that is valuable and perhaps it makes sense to put it into legislation. Certainly it's hard to object to much in Bill C-32. But it changes very little.

GANGJEONG VILLAGE ELDER APPEALS TO POPE

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 13 hours ago
Dear Pope Francis, I sincerely ask for you to visit Gangjeong village on Jeju Island. I am an old man in my 70s. I was born in Gangjeong and have never left my home village. Our village was established about 450 years ago, and is famous for its beautiful nature and fertile land. But one day, we heard shocking news on TV that our village had been selected as the final location of a naval base. The decision making process was non-democratic. It was decided without proper consultation with Gangjeong villagers. The decision was made in just 13 days. Gureombi Rock is like a mot... more »

You show up at critical moments in each others lives to move things forward, fulfill prior arrangements and assist in the manifestation of dreams. None of these things could happen without the “other”. These “others” show up for you in many ways. U.S. bans astronauts

*Political fanaticism based on geographic ignorance turns America into a loser* NASA's 2014 budget is $17.6 billion which is something like 0.6% of the federal budget or 0.1% of the GDP. These percentages are much lower than in the 1960s when America was feeling humiliated by the USSR and the budget reached as much as 4.5% of the GDP. But it's still a lot of money. You would expect the country that has arguably been the #1 leader – well, at some critical points, #2 – to be able to send astronauts to space. You would be wrong. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and Vice President Richard M. Nixon greet the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in Washington, D.C. The news is awash this week with stories of foreign doctors unable to find medical work in New Zealand – because, says the Medical Council, there are enough local doctors already, thank you very much. Which leads to an obvious question: Are the rules around licensing designed to protect doctors’ patients? Or to protect doctors’ salaries? Foreign doctors have to sit a local exam before being allowed to practice. The local Medical Council limits entry to foreign doctors by limiting the number of examinations it offers. Cosy. Rather, it includes programs whose funding levels are set each year by lawmakers during the appropriations process, including the military, education, job training, and the environment.

Inferences at preliminary inquiry

R. v. Cavanagh, 2014 ONCA 251 [5] This was not a case of failing to consider relevant evidence, but merely a question of assessing the reasonableness of the inferences to be drawn from the evidence as the preliminary inquiry judge is required to do in a circumstantial case. As McLachlin C.J.C. said in *R. v. Arcuri*, 2001 SCC 54 at paras. 29 and 30: The question that arises in the case at bar is whether the preliminary inquiry judge's task differs where the defence tenders exculpatory evidence, as is its prerogative under s. 541. Imaginary Numbers, 2: Inflation

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
That figure you hear on the news reporting “inflation” – that thing called the Consumer Price Index – it’s really not anything like you think it is. And as John Crudele explains, it’s getting worse: The latest money-saving effort is something called a “chain weighted” measure. This is a version of something I’ve written about a lot — geometric weighting. In brief, it means that if something becomes too costly (like steak), then people won’t buy it. They’ll buy hamburger instead. So even though steak prices are up, that increase won’t show up fully in the CPI. Therefore, the ... more »
