Thailand: Desperate Western Media Unravels into Juvenile Gossip Mill

Land Destroyer at Land Destroyer - 1 hour ago
*February 13, 2014* (ATN) - Having spectacularly failed to defend the incompetent and now terminally ill regime of Thaksin Shinawatra and his nepotist proxy, sister Yingluck Shinawatra, the Western media has resorted to slander, gossip, and deferrals to discredited propagandists passed off as "experts." The British "Independent" newspaper, in their article, "Thai princess uses social media to ‘declare war’: Photos posted by Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol widely interpreted as a sign of her support for anti-government protesters," attempts to monkey the tweets of discredited hate-speec... more »

New York State's Meaningless Concessions Throw Out the Only Tests Worth Keeping

In New York, the teacher evaluation formula is based on 20 percent state mandated tests, 60 percent observation, and 20 percent local assessments. While canceling nary a state test or any of the planned implementation of the Corporate Core, the New York Board of Regents and their new panel of CorpEd advocates have have come up with a plan to shove local systems into dumping their own local assessments in favor of, what? Will state tests now count 40 percent of a teacher's evaluation instead of 20 if local assessments are jettisoned? From the Press Release February 10: Increasing ... more »

I would be lying if I said this pregnancy has been easy. I have been hit with some really not fun complications this time around and sometimes it feels like I am muddling through. Between work with Housewife Eclectic, being a mom, being pregnant and working as a photographer, something had to give. Sadly, that something was the more difficult housework. Show Me the (Subsidy) Spreadsheets!

Kenneth Thomas at Middle Class Political Economist - 4 hours ago
Good Jobs First's new report, *Show Us the Subsidized Jobs*, is its third assessment of state subsidy transparency, following up on reports published in 2007 and 2010. The good news is that transparency continues to spread: From 23 states in 2007 to 37 in 2010 to 47 plus the District of Columbia in 2014.* The bad news is that for most states, online transparency still has a long way to go. Why is transparency important? As the reports says, without it, it makes it impossible for the public to get at even the most basic return on investment, accountability or equity questions. It'd all kicking off. This from Euronews. Thousands of Bosnians have been demonstrating for a sixth day, calling for the resignation of the government. There have been mass protests in more than 30 cities and the heads of four regional cantons have already resigned. Today there is much debate over the value and size of the self-publishing channel. Yesterday this channel was restricted by the physical supply chain, which effectively remains owned by the traditional publishing channel. This is no longer the case with the digital channel and works are only restricted by all the other works that they compete with on their virtual shelf and the money spent in promoting and marketing a title. Self-publishing was once seen by the market as vanity publishing and being the books that publishers didn’t want and therefore unworthy of the attention of co... more »

Shirley Temple and Bill "Bojangles" RobinsonGrowing up watching old movies, I was a big fan of Shirley Temple, whose dimples, singing, and tap-dancing charmed my parents' generation. Temple danced with some of the tap greats, African-American men who Hollywood cast as servants, yassuh-ing their way into the dance scenes. The popularity of the adorable child star opened the back door for many talents. When I was a young teen, Shirley Temple, then known as Shirley Temple Black, spoke out about undergoing a radical mastectomy. This was unheard of, and took enormous courage in a time wh... more »

*Evidence points to climate change role in floods, says official UK scientist* *Dame Julia is just a silly old lady who does not know what she is talking about. Her agency predicted a DRY winter. That's how much she knows and understands about the weather* Climate change almost certainly lies behind the storms that have been lashing Britain this winter, according to the Met Office’s chief scientist. Dame Julia Slingo said while there was not yet “definitive proof”, “all the evidence” pointed to a role for the phenomenon. She also delivered a grim warning that the country should... more »

“Can the night sky appear both serene and surreal? Perhaps classifiable as serene in the below panoramic image taken last Friday are the faint lights of small towns glowing across a dark foreground landscape of Doi Inthanon National Park in Thailand, as well as the numerous stars glowing across a dark background starscape. Also visible are the planet Venus and a band of zodiacal light on the image left. *Click image for larger size.* Unusual events are also captured, however. First, the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy, while usually a common site, appears here to hover surreall... more »
