FROM BOTH SIDES NOW: Columnist Collins confronts The Crazy!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 1 hour ago
*THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2013* *Part 4—Our own tribe’s lack of smarts:* It’s true! Many conservatives say and believe the darnedest things! To cite the saddest example, many conservatives even say Obama was born in Kenya. You have to be *extremely* gullible to believe that ludicrous claim. But people have always believed the darnedest things, down through the annals of time. For quite a few years, we liberals got to laugh at all the ditto-heads. Finally, after the war in Iraq, we began to emerge from our nap in the woods, where we’d been for a good many years. We liberals began to r... more »

Quick Oversight Hearing Primer

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 1 hour ago
I'm not watching the big House Obamacare oversight hearing this morning, but half my twitter stream is, and we've reached the point in which they're complaining that we're not going to learn anything. Here's why they are actually very useful. Even when they're boring. Time for a quick primer. Congressional oversight hearings are mostly useful because they exist. The actual hearing itself? Not much usually happens. But the threat of being called to account, and then the process of being called to account, should and probably does put pressure on executive branch agencies and departme... more »

Nicely done Are You Being Served?

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 1 hour ago
Are You Being Served was never my favourite sitcom, not very subtle. But the bit from 22:22 to 23:45 is rather good: "What are you afraid of?" "...The unknown" And an inside leg measuring technique that really dates the programme, National Service was that recent in the early 1970s. Sadly with the death of Frank Thornton (Captain Stephen Peacock) on March 16, 2013 at the age of 92, the only member of the original cast still living is Nicholas Smith (Mr. Cuthbert Rumbold).

In the nearly nine years I've been blogging, I've almost never mentioned McDonald's, a corporation that's responsible for more obesity than sugar, polyunsaturated fats and cheese combined. This is because, largely thanks to Morgan Spurlock's *Super Size Me*, I would think that most of us already knew that McDick's represents the very worst in corporations and everything that is wrong with America. They slowly kill us with ersatz, corporately-generated food substitute and had strong-armed the House into passing the Cheeseburger Law that protects their bottom line from tort laws... more »

I recently called attention to Breakthrough Institute's report, How to Make Nuclear Power Cheap. This report called attention to the potential use of advanced nuclear technology to lower and even dramatically lower nuclear costs. This point has been repeatedly argued in Nuclear Green since 2008. Thus it should not be assumed that nuclear costs will remain constant over the next 35 years. My findings which are based on the Research of Dr. Per Petersen, other nuclear engineers and scientists, ORNL, MIT, and UC Berkley, is that advanced nuclear technology, using liquid salts holds g... more »

Happy Birthday to Kevin Kline, 66. Good stuff: 1. Andrew Sprung argues with me about GOP dysfunction and the Constitution. "It seems to me that almost all our sadnesses are moments of tension, which we feel as paralysis because we no longer hear our astonished emotions living. Because we are alone with the unfamiliar presence that has entered us; because everything we trust and are used to is for a moment taken away from us; because we stand in the midst of a transition where we cannot remain standing. That is why the sadness passes: the new presence inside us, the presence that has been added, has entered our heart, has gone into its innermost chamber and is no longer even there, - is already in our... more »

Now this is just about as cool as can be. *Star Trek Continues* is a fan-supported effort to finish off the last two years of the original five-year mission. They've got a full episode out, and it's pretty darn good. Episode One: *Pilgrim of Eternity* with Michael Forrest returning as the Greek god Apollo.
