Obama & Rouhani: the historic handshake that never happened

Land Destroyer at Land Destroyer - 17 minutes ago
Nile Bowie Russia Today As political leaders in Washington and Tehran signal they are in favor of diplomacy, is a genuine rapprochement between the two powers actually possible? The speeches at this week’s UN General Assembly by the leaders of Iran and the US, although each striking conciliatory tones, both envisage a vastly different international order. Recently-elected President Hassan Rouhani, in his first speech to the assembly, reiterated that the Iranian nuclear issue is essentially a red herring, while eloquently addressing the moral deficiencies of the international order... more »

I often write here about books I read, but I don't review. I did glance at Stein's book, however. It has an audience, but it's not for me; been there, done that. The subtitle is provocative, however. The idea that a dozen or so numbers "define the universe." *That's* a mind-blowing concept. The gravitational constant. The speed of light. Absolute zero. Planck'... more »

If we look up "holistic" in Google we find, apart from the narrower medical term, that it means "characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole." ‘The Billionaire and the Mechanic’

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 3 hours ago
It’s the story of how the billionaire, Larry Ellison, brought the America’s Cup to San Francisco through his friendship with a car mechanic. “It’s non-fiction that reads like a novel.” And this is just the story of how he first won the Cup, and that’s almost the material for a film. As if history’s greatest ever sporting comeback—the dramatic story, that finally ended this morning, of how the Cup was held by the same team—isn’t material enough on its own! Are the mainstream media informing Americans of climate change? "Absolutely not." Says Subhankar Banerjee: "The corporate media is doing a dismal job. After my first piece was published about the Boulder Colorado flood last Friday, I received numerous comments from readers that the media is showing the tragedy and what is going on, but no one is raising a single question about if this event is related to climate change. Jaisal Noor, TRNN Producer: "...supporters of President Obama would say that he is confined by the political reality, lack of public support, and the Republicans, who will not back any real climate change initiatives. What's your response to people that say that President Obama is doing is much as he can?" Bannerjee: "That is absolutely not true, because you just mentioned the public. The public, as polls after poll show, are deeply concerned about climate change, and support, actually, public policy to address climate change. And you brought up the Republican. Republican leadership of course has been horrible. Bush was the oil president, and then Obama is following in his heels. First, on "fillibuster." As Josh Huder pointed out on twitter, there certainly is a filibuster involved here. That's correct, but the filibuster is, essentially, the objection to the motion to proceed, which forces a cloture vote and sets the clock for the cloture vote. That's the filibuster. By all accounts, the filibuster will be defeated at that point. Cruz's speech is occupying a (very large!) portion of the time within that filibuster; if he wasn't speaking, either someone else would be or the Senate would be in recess. Ford ditches his aides and wanders into crowds at a Saturday night street festival on the Danforth. Harper works hard to avoid over exposure. Ford has his own open line show. The prime minister seeks political advantage in a squeaky clean image, proudly denying marijuana use in his younger years while Ford laughs, and, without missing a beat, agrees he smoked “a lot.’’ What explains this oxymoron? * * *“That Savage of Fire, That Seed...”* by Chet Raymo "Let me say this as simply as I can. The Sun, like the universe, is mostly hydrogen. An atom of hydrogen is a single proton and a single electron, bound together. The center of the Sun is so hot- half-a-million miles of overbearing matter- that the electrons and protons can't hold together (try holding hands in a surging, tumultuous crowd), so what you have is a hot soup- a plasma- of protons and electrons, flailing about independently. The electrical force between like charges is repulsive, so every time two protons approac... more »

Some random impertinent political questions

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
It’s reported Prime Minister John Key took ill in New York on his way to the United Nations. Was it when he heard the news from Wellington about polling showing David Cunliffe could form a government? Prime Minister John Key is in New York trying to get New Zealand a seat on the UN Security Council. But why on earth does New Zealand *need* a seat on the UN Security Council? Cunliffe’s “team” has gone from being Anyone But Cunliffe to All Backing Cunliffe … says David Cunliffe. Anyone believe him? Has Winston Peters really got any proof of Tariana giving away money she shouldn’t ... more »

Fukushima: “In the Pocket of the Nuclear Industry”

* Fukushima: * *“In the Pocket of the Nuclear Industry”* by Douglas A. Yates “The Obama administration’s failure to alert Americans to the danger of Fukushima radiation is motivated by corporate politics and the interests of the nuclear power industry. The March 11, 2011 earthquake off the northwest coast of Japan wrecked a complex of nuclear power plants, throwing three units into meltdown and exploding high-level radionuclides into the environment. With the industry’s reputation and billions of dollars in financial arrangements hanging in the fire, the president chose expedien... more »

Diane Ravitch Is More than a Writer of Books

Jim Horn at Schools Matter - 1 day ago
*On Diane Ravitch: A Brief Essay* Jim Horn *On September 18, Joe Bowers listed 33 reviews of Diane Ravitch’s new book, Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America’s Public Schools. Since then, many other reviews have appeared, including a very substantial one by George Schmidt at Substance News. Please see Joe’s list for some very good play-by-play reviews. That is not what I am offering here.* In 2007 when Diane Ravitch descended from her 20,000-foot view of the education reform landscape to examine what was going on at ground level, she ... more »

Gluten and Cross-Sensitivity as a Factor in Post-Interferon Malaise and Autoimmune Syndromes of Chronic Hep C

George Henderson at The High-fat Hep C Diet - 1 day ago
(Music: Charlie Parker Live at Storyville, 1953) Coeliac and non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, conditions which can cause (apart from the classic syndrome) cirrhosis of the liver independent of viruses or alcohol, are hard to treat by simple removal of gluten grains, because gliadin sensitivity creates cross-sensitivity to peptides found in other foods. (Hat-tip to Suppversity for posting about this). Gliadin (Wheat), Casein (Milk), Avedin (Barley and Oat) and Zein (Corn) peptides are prolamines (peptides with Pro-Pro bonds). But why does instant coffee feature at all? Well, coffe... more »

EU to Legally Enforce Genocide of Europeans

Rufus News From Atlantis at News From Atlantis. - 1 day ago
The European Soviet Union is the enemy of Europe. This is something everyone who cares to pay* *attention to globalisation and the destruction of the European people *must* be aware of. Now we have the evidence of the genocidal conspiracy against the 'goyim'. The following video and information deserves to go viral on the internet. There is no excuse for not spreading this as far as possible - indeed, we must do this urgently, as even discussion of this depotism is due to be criminalised in the gulag which has been built across much of Europe. George H. W. Bush: Somalia New World Order Speech - Remarks at Texas A&M University (December 15, 1992) from Spike1138 on Vimeo. "For the first time, turning this global vision into a new and better world is, indeed, a realistic possibility. It is a hope that embodies our country's tradition of idealism, which has made us unique among nations and uniquely successful. And our vision is not mere utopianism. The advance of democratic ideals reflects a hard-nosed sense of our own, of American self-interest. For certain truths have, indeed, now become evident: Governments responsive to... more »

Iggy's Back - Slamming Dion, Rae & Layton

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 1 day ago
Michael Ignatieff has a reputation for smearing others, even where they've been right and he's been wrong, and he appears to have lost none of his appetite for that sort of thing. In his new book, *Fire and Ashes*, Iggy takes swipes at Stephane Dion, at Bob Rae and at Jack Layton - everyone it seems *except* Stephen Harper. And as for Harper soaring to a majority on the back of Ignatieff's hapless leadership? Well that's the voters' fault, not Iggy's. “*So instead of getting the democracy they deserve, voters end up paying for their own disillusion.*” Thanks, Mike. You're all... more »

Lapham Visits Death

*For 40 years during the Cold War, the American government,* * both Democrat and Republican, deployed the shadow of death (i.e., the constant threat of nuclear annihilation) * *to limit the freedoms and quiet the voices* * of the American people.* * The surveillance apparatus now waging the perpetual* * war on terror is geared to control a herd of trembling obedience.** * * * So writes American intellectual (and Caroline Mulroney father-in-law) Lewis Lapham in an ode to Death. Coates continues to seem to flip concerning the Zimmerman trial!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 1 day ago
*TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2013* *A favorite blogger, a struggling progressive culture:* Ta-Nehisi Coates is easily one of our favorite bloggers. Two reasons: He has his own subject matter and he has his own point of view. He doesn’t roll out the twenty familiar topics and say the thirty familiar things, with one or two of the standard points ever so slightly adjusted. That said, Coates has seemed to be doing something unusual in the past week. Unless we’re reading him incorrectly, he’s been changing his stance on the Zimmerman trial, without explaining why. The process continues toda... more »

The Story of the Jews (Part 4)

Chagall, Russian Wedding Simon Schama's *The Story of Jews *is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, one of the best things the BBC has done in years. A good deal of the credit for that goes to Simon Schama himself. As a story-telling historian, few can match him. This week's episode, Over the Rainbow*, *took us from Eastern Europe to the United States and back again - from the Pale of Settlement to *The Wizard of Oz, *and then (leaving a lump in this viewer's throat) to a village in Nazi-occupied Lithuania - homeland of Simon Schama's own family, on his mother's side. * * *“Washington’s Tyranny”* by Paul Craig Roberts "The war criminal Barack Obama has declared his “outrage” over the 62 deaths associated with the takeover of a Nairobi, Kenya, shopping mall by al-Shabaab fighters. But the attack on the shopping mall was Obama’s fault. Al Shabaab spokesmen said that the attack on the Nairobi mall was a retaliatory response to the Kenyan troops sent to fight against them in Somalia. The Kenyan troops, of course, were sent to Somalia as a result of pressure from Washington. Just as the outbreak of violence in Mali resulted from the fighters that O... more »

Nazi Takeover In North Dakota?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Leith, North Dakota is on the map. Actually it isn't *literally* on the map, just in the news. The town was founded in 1910 along a railroad line that was abandoned in 1984. Since there were no highways going through Leith it started losing population. At its height in the 1930s there were 174 people. Today there are 24. It's in Grant County (pop.- 2,394), named for Ulysses S. Grant. Last year Grant County gave Romney 1,012 votes (73%). It also went for defeated Republican Senate candidate Rick Berg by 61% (842) and for winning Republican House candidate Kevin Cramer by 65% (912). ... more »
