While I was away from blogging, I found that occasionally I had spaces of time to fill. Thanks to our near-infinite supply of books, more than a few hours were so spent. But when the media of cadaverous trees was not enough I got into retro video games. Hence why readers have to put up with occasional posts about them. I am far from the only one who has this peccadillo. The vast expansion of content on YouTube these last few years is fuelling interest in what the games systems of yesteryear have to offer. And it's not just folk of a certain vintage reliving digital nostalgia for a ... more »

What Mattered This Week?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 1 hour ago
Well, Syria, obviously. I'm going to mention, however, the latest confirmation that Ruth Bader Ginsburg is going nowhere anytime soon. Really could be a very big deal. It sure was an unusually newsy week for the last week of August, no? Not sure what I have for "didn't matter." How about impeachment talk? I'm as guilty as anyone for picking up on stray comments by GOP politicians, and in some symbolic sense one could make a case for it being important, but I'm not really sure the comments do matter. What do you think? What am I missing? What do you think mattered this week?

It wasn't so long ago that Republicans won an election by fearmongering about gays destroying "traditional marriage." So it's rather stunning that we've evolved so quickly to this level of public acceptance of equal marriage rights for gays. Michael Ratner, President Emeritus of the Center for Constitutional Rights, explains the REAL reason why Obama has been intent on attacking Syria. It is not to destroy chemical weapons but rather to degrade the Syrian military, leading ultimately to "...the overthrow of Assad and getting rid of some of the opposition groups that the United States doesn't want in there." The only lawful international justifications for a war of agression are (1) self defense and (2) a ruling by the UN Security Council. The only national justification under the U.S. Constitution is an affirmative vote of the U.S. Congress. Obama will violate both if he goes forward with his plan.

Obama – the Nobel Peace Prize!

President Barack Obama, the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize because of his opposition to the invasion of Iraq, is reversing his political role. He is now acting as an advocate for punishing President Bashar al-Assad of Syria for using poisonous chemical gas against his people. Not everything is political

Seamus Heaney - famous, and rightly so I've long found that the BBC's political concerns have a tendency to intrude into places where you wouldn't expect them to intrude. You can be minding your own business, enjoying some history, arts, science or drama programme, when up crops some jarring political point. Then sometimes when there *is* a political aspect to something, thought it's not of prime importance - such as a sub-theme in a novel, or some incident in a composer's life -, that political theme comes to dominate the discussion on a BBC programme far more than it ought to. I always assumed the "unwritten law", that is, a husband could kill his wife's lover if caught in adultery, was just an urban myth. The suggestion that provocation, a legitimate defence used today, is the modern form of "unwritten law" fails as provocation does not justify homicide - it merely goes to degree of guilt - and is not directed at adultery at all. Sunday Classics' Great Moments in Music History: Arnold Schoenberg, the movie mogul, and the mogul's "boys"

*Schoenberg, seen in a 1910 self-portrait (Yes, he was also a painter)* *by Ken* Or we could call this installment of Great Moments in Music History: "The Day Arnold Schoenberg's career as a Hollywood film composer began and ended." As I mentioned last week, I've been reading the second part of Arthur Rubinstein's autobiography, *My Many Years*. And as I also mentioned, Rubinstein seems to have known just about everybody in the world of the arts (not just music) through most of his career. In October 1939, with Poland already fallen to the German *Blitzkrieg* that set off World W... more »

Obama Promises "Limited" And "Narrow" Strikes Against Syria

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 15 hours ago
War is not a casual affair. But the way President Obama speaks you'd think America is just going for a stroll in the park. This is criminal and irresponsible leadership. If you are going to go to war, state your reasons, provide the evidence for the other side's wrongdoing, explain why there are no peaceful avenues, and then bomb the shit out of the enemy. But, this is not Obama's approach. He has not provided any evidence, he is barely stating his reasons why he wants to attack Syria other than repeating the lie about Assad using chemical weapons, he is not serious about making... more »

But, how can nations like France, England, and America honestly say that they are interested in protecting the weak and punishing immoral states for using chemical weapons when their record suggests otherwise? *French companies gave Saddam's regime poison gas in the 1980s*, so France needs some explaining to do before it lectures Assad. US Secretary of State John Kerry has said that, having considered the evidence presented in a Government Assessment released yesterday, the US will punish the Syrian government for its alleged use of chemical weapons in Damascus on 21 August 2013. The US government has taken it upon itself to act as judge, jury and executioner over the Syria gassings. Chemical Warfare: Gaza, the Jordan Valley under Occupation and The Apartheid State of Israel

Paul Coker at News Spike - 1 day ago
*The Isreali Defence Force *regularly and routinely drops White Phosphorus *ON CHILDREN*. These are *US-made *incendiary munitions. Unlike Syria, both the US and the State of Isreal are signitorys to international treaties and international laws banning the use of Chemical Weapons under all circumstances in global armed conflicts. These laws are very specific - they have to be. A can of Axe Body spray is not an weapon of mass destruction. A shell-casing loaded with a weaponised delivery payload of Sarrin Gas clearly is. White Phosphorus ("*Willie-P*") is instantl... more »

Revenge Porn

Seoul’s *Chosun Ilbo** *reports that the female singer Hyon Song Wol was arrested along with 11 other entertainers on August 17 for filming themselves having sex. They then sold the videos, some of which made it to China. The 12 people, who belonged to prominent performing troupes, were killed by firing squad on August 20 as their families looked on. Hyon was best known for performing the song “A Girl in the Saddle of a Steed.” Kim met her a decade ago, but his father Kim Jong Il — then North Korea’s ruler — apparently did not approve of the relationship. Hyon subsequently married... more »

The U.S. Air Force firebombing Japan in 1945 "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" - Juvenal, Satires (VI, 347–8) "I have no interest in any open-ended conflict in Syria, but we do have to make sure that when countries break international norms on weapons like chemical weapons that could threaten us, that they are held accountable," President Barack Obama said in a PBS interview earlier this week.

Argumentation about de Broglie-Bohm pilot wave theory

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 1 day ago
*Guest blog by Ilja Schmelzer, a right-wing anarchist and independent scientist* A nice summary of standard arguments against de Broglie-Bohm theory can be found at R. F. Streater's "Lost Causes in Theoretical Physics" website. Ulrich Mohrhoff [broken link, sorry] also combines the presentation of his position with an interesting rejection of pilot wave theory. These arguments I consider in a different file. Here, I consider the arguments proposed in several articles of Luboš Motl's blog "The reference frame": David Bohm born 90 years ago and Bohmists & segregation of primitive and ... more »

Forced To Be A Jerk Over Impeachment

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 1 day ago
Yeah, only a jerk would point out that "impeachment" is what happens in the House, while trail and conviction, or acquittal, or "Not Proven," is what happens in the Senate. Well, I'm afraid today I'm just going to be that jerk. In response to a Kay Steiger inforgraphic over at TPM, which asks: Republicans are talking a big game about impeaching the president...Could they actually pull it off? And concludes that, no, they couldn't, because the Senate. But of course 218 Republicans in the House certainly could impeach Barack Obama. (As long as I'm at it...no, technically, it doesn'... more »
