Glenn Greenwald says this is a misquote: "I will be far more aggressive in my reporting from now. I am going to publish many more documents. I am going to publish things on England too. I have many documents on England's spy system. I think they will be sorry for what they did," Greenwald, speaking in Portuguese, told reporters at Rio's airport where he met Miranda upon his return to Brazil. He's right. It wasn't an exact quote. Nonetheless, having read Glenn's version, I think Reuters captured the general sense of Glenn's statement. Even in his own words, it reads like a not so su... more »

For that reason, we hadn’t seen it until we saw Paul Krugman’s link. We clicked the link and started reading. In paragraph 5, we hit this: KELLER (8/19/13): [The Common Core] is an ambitious undertaking, and there is plenty of room for debate about precisely how these standards are translated into classrooms. Christie, Strategic Politicians, and the 2012 Cycle

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 2 hours ago
John Sides makes the point today that Chris Christie's choice to pass on WH 2012 was consistent with the pretty good chance that Barack Obama would be re-elected. Strategic politicians, John says, consider the chances of winning in their decisions about running, and that a strategic candidate might have looked at the landscape in 2011 and said, “You know what, I’ll have a better shot in 2016.” And we aren’t suggesting that there aren’t idiosyncratic factors at work either. It’s just to say that Christie’s decision was nicely in line with what political science says. Put that way... more »

The Life Of Nouri al-Maliki, An Interview With Journalist Ned Parker

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 3 hours ago
Nouri al-Maliki has been the prime minister of Iraq since 2006. His reign has been marked by increasing controversy as he has reneged on promises, and taken on his rivals using the security forces and corruption charges. His approach to government can in part be explained by his past. He joined Iraq’s first Shiite Islamist organization the Dawa Party in the 1960s, which was then an underground movement. He was eventually forced into exile in 1979, because of his activities, and became a leader in the armed struggle against Saddam Hussein in both Iran and Syria. After the 2003 inva... more »

How Germany Made a Killing on the Euro-Crisis

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 5 hours ago
Europe's fiscal crisis has hammered much of the E.U. from Ireland to Britain, Spain, Portugal, France and Greece. Germany, however, has made out like a bandit. The collapse of every nation around it made German debt much, much more attractive to investors looking for security. So much more attractive that Germany saved 41-billion Euros in interest charges. Sure, Germany put a lot of money into bailouts for countries like Greece but that totalled 599-million Euros to date. 0.6 billion they put out, 41-billion they saved. That sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

David Miranda was never even given the British version of his Miranda Rights. As a matter of fact, the legal term "Mirandized" may have just gotten a whole new meaning. Thanks to the Heathrow Airport arrest and detention yesterday of David Miranda, domestic partner of Glenn Greenwald, we now have irrefutable proof that our civil rights have eroded even faster than we thought. The whole world is a police state, and we are all deemed terrorists unless and until they decide otherwise. Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
Watch this neat time lapse video showing 24 hours of airline activity, as seen from by satellite. Watch ot several times—there’s so much to discover. It’s Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, so nights are long, and the South Pole is dark. Watch the progression of day to night. It starts with mid-morning in New Zealand… Content is copyright PC.BlogSpot.Com © Please contact author for permission to republish: (organon at ihug.co.nz)

Northerntruthseeker Rant For Sunday, August 18th, 2013

Northerntruthseeker at Northerntruthseeker - 1 day ago
Sunday again... And it is time for my weekly rant.... There are so many things going on right now around the world that it is tough to know where to begin... I thought I would begin with the massive upheaval that is now going on in Egypt....When I first saw that Egypt was in revolt again, much like two years ago, I smelled a rat.. And that rat was definitely wearing a Star of David on his lapel. It has been hard to get any truthful information about exactly what is occurring with this newest "revolution" happening in Egypt. Much of the so called media, which of course spins nothing... more »

Republicans Hope To Learn How An Anti-Hispanic Reactionary Wins In A Majority-Hispanic New Mexico House District

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
After giving up his House seat to run a losing battle for an open Republican Senate seat in New Mexico, Stevan Pearce was reelected to his former House seat two years later (2010) by defeating, 55-44%, a very weak Blue Dog Democrat Harry Teague, who had depressed Democratic turnout by voting with the GOP on too many critical issues. Last year Pearce beat another weak Democrat 59-41%, winning 14 of the 19 counties in the district, although losing the big prize, Dona Ana, by far the biggest county in NM-02. This year the DCCC is seriously taking a look at defeating Pearce. He's an a... more »

' 203. Farmer Joe JUST NOW Maybe next time make the BBC team stay at home in the UK, and commentate on the television pictures viewers are watching. (Like the marathons, where commentary could have come from Salford rather than elsewhere in Moscow). If the 'usual suspect' castlist of former competitors want to attend the championships, they can buy their own tickets, rather than leaving the licence-payers to foot the bill.' Quote of the Day: Free Speech vs the #Surveillance State … ?

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
“… *freedom of speech *is the key issue in protecting a free society. Once we cannot communicate freely, the game is up. Since the Internet is near to being transformed from a mechanism of freedom into the ultimate weapon for control, a turn-key totalitarian state is almost available…” - historian Scott Powell, “Taking a DIM View of the World — And Why Everything Depends On It” Content is copyright PC.BlogSpot.Com © Please contact author for permission to republish: (organon at ihug.co.nz)

Quick Project XIII Update!

Obi-Wan Kabuki at AMERICAN KABUKI - 1 day ago
I spoke with Caleb this morning and he gave me this picture of the Windows Desktop Project XIII app. He expects this will be ready for release in 2-3 weeks. It works now but the layout of it has to be adapted to the PC format and screen shape and way of doing things. Apparently its a fairly simple translation from the Windows Phone version. *Screen shot of the alpha version of Project XIII for the Windows Desktop - still in development* Caleb thinks the iPhone version of Project XIII will be released to the Apple Store on August 24th. This is tentative and could cha... more »

Crock pot bread.

risa bear at A Way to Live - 1 day ago
Greased bowl on top of a trivet inside of slow cooker. No two recipes ever the same. This one has water or veg stock, spelt flour, oatmeal, cracked barley, brewer's yeast, sesame seeds, sea salt, a duck egg, yeast, honey -- practically no-knead, raised in the crock pot on low, then basted with olive oil and sprinkled with poppy seeds. Bake on high until it looks right and "thumps" right, then turn out. In our pot, about three hours. We slip a fork under the edge of the lid to let the steam out in the last two hours or so. Makes fabulous French toast.

Rant for the Day

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
It's the perennial question facing bloggers about BBC bias: Do our own biases bias us against the BBC's reporting, or is the BBC biased? Well, please judge for yourselves here... When I started listening to *Broadcasting House *on Radio 4 this morning, I was expecting the Muslim Brotherhood side of the Egyptian argument to be given the lead, given that it's been given the lead over recent days on almost every BBC programme I've seen or heard, and almost the opening thing I heard on the programme was the voice of an MB supporter screaming that Morsi was elected and 'where are human... more »

How do you stop land banking?

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
*The case of the land-owner in Auckland’s Flat Bush who stands to make a profit of over $100 million on land he bought for less than a million eighteen years ago—and having done nothing to it—has everyone hating “land bankers.” So everyone hates “land banking,” but no-one apparently knows how to stop it. But what if, with one hit, you could stop land banking and provide affordable housing? Guest Poster Phil Hayward reckons it’s a snip. You just stop ring-fencing the city …* Consider basic urban economics: if we draw a curve showing land values for an urban economy, it slopes up ... more »

*Starwhackers Patrol, please note:* Here, again, we see that Peter Jackson is an incredibly clever and perceptive man, who knows (like Marlon Brando, Michael Jackson, Dave Chapelle, Randy Quaid and so many others) exactly how Hollywood works - and dodges a massive bullet. The obvious, conscious decision to portray Wormtongue is the most pale, pasty, creepy *Anglo *vision of vile treachery spared him all hell to pay later.... Charting America's (And Our Own) Descent Into Madness

He's one of the most under-celebrated sages of this era but that doesn't stop American Henry Giroux from dispensing invaluable pearls of wisdom and insight. He currently is Chair in English and Cultural Studies at McMaster. Perhaps from Canada he's able to more clearly chart his native land's descent into madness. *America is descending into madness. The stories it now tells are filled with cruelty, deceit, lies, and legitimate all manner of corruption and mayhem.
