Corruption, smuggling and secretly mixing pork with beef are exacerbating Indonesia's beef crisis. Late last month, Luthfi Hasan Ishaaq, the high-profile chairman of the Prosperous Justice Party, was arrested for allegedly accepting bribes from beef importers, and a container that was said to contain fish but turned out to be carrying illegally imported Australian beef. This is the latest example of how a beef shortage is triggering illegal practices in the country. | http://aje.me/12BFjNV

Retail Apocalypse: Why Are Major Retail Chains All Over America Collapsing?
If the economy is improving, then why are many of the largest retail chains in America closing hundreds of stores? When I was growing up, Sears, J.C. Penney, Best Buy and RadioShack were all considered to be unstoppable retail powerhouses. But now it is being projected that all of them will close

The world's largest arms manufacturers are expanding their cybersecurity businesses as sales of traditional weapons slump for the first time in decades. Arms sales by the 100 biggest weapons makers fell for the first time since the mid-1990s in 2011 as economies slowed and purchases of equipment were reduced, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said on Monday. | http://aje.me/YBgISl

On Inside Story: Arms sales fell by 5 percent in 2011, the first time since the 1990s, according to a study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, SIPRI.

SIPRI said austerity policies, decreases in military expenditure and postponements in weapons programme procurement affected overall arms sales in North America and Western Europe.

But are there other reasons behind this fall? (Image: Getty)

The Voynich Manuscript is a detailed 240-page book written in a language or script that is completely unknown.
The Mysterious - Voynich Manuscript

Named after the Polish-American antiquarian bookseller Wilfrid M. Voynich, who acquired it in 1912, the Voynich Manuscript is a detailed 240-page book written in a language or script that is completely unknown. Its pages are also filled with colorful drawings of strange diagrams, odd events and plants that do not seem to match any known species, adding to the intrigue of the document and the difficulty of deciphering it. The original author of the manuscript remains unknown, but carbon dating has revealed that its pages were made sometime between 1404 and 1438. It has been called "the world's most mysterious manuscript."

Theories abound about the origin and nature of the manuscript. Some believe it was meant to be a pharmacopoeia, to address topics in medieval or early modern medicine. Many of the pictures of herbs and plants hint that it many have been some kind of textbook for an alchemist. The fact that many diagrams appear to be of astronomical origin, combined with the unidentifiable biological drawings, has even led some fanciful theorists to propose that the book may have an alien origin.

One thing most theorists agree on is that the book is unlikely to be a hoax, given the amount of time, money and detail that would have been required to make it.

The film includes the testimony of many experts on the subject and serves as a valuable tool to inform students and those interested in environmental issues. The film has been well used in public forums, government as well as college and high school classrooms. The film includes an interview with Percy Schmeiser, who lost the rights to his own crops to Monsanto, when Monsanto seeds contaminated his fields. As Schmeiser says in the film: "It doesn't matter how it gets there, destroying your crop. All of your crop, becomes Monsanto's ownership and they can lay a lawsuit on top of it against you. Even if the contamination rate is 1%, all your other 99% of your crop goes to Monsanto. And that's what startled the world, how farmers can lose their rights overnight, an organic farmer can lose his seeds and his rights overnight, and get subject to a lawsuit." The film shows how farmers like Schmeiser and indigenous people may lose their way of life and belongings in the face of new biotech friendly science and legislation. A Silent Forest won first place in the EarthVision Environmental Film Festival and a First Place in the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival. The film is created by award-winning director Ed Schehl who has been making and promoting documentaries on environmentalism and social justice for 15 years. As new crucial forms of legislation and urgent needs for action arise, this film makes information available to the general public.

White Water, Black Gold is a movie about an activist who travels around Canada to learn about the Alberta Tar Sands operation. There's ongoing controversy in the US about the Keystone Pipeline that would transport this oil to US refineries. Overall I think the film is worth watching (especially since it's free). There's certainly a bias against tar sand running through the film, but to the best of my knowledge it's pretty accurate. And it's entertaining... an easily followed narrative where the narrator visits places relevant to the issue.
