Yes, the US Should Brag About Peaceful Transition of Power

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 21 minutes ago
Dylan Matthews tries to spoil the party by pointing out that the United States is not, in fact, unique in its ability to transfer power peacefully. To which I say: nuts to that. It is a big deal -- a very big deal. And while other nations have gotten the hang of it, the US was very much a pioneer. Yes, we could argue about the Brits vs. the US, but either way when Jefferson replaced Adams it really was something amazing and rare in world history. And we do it all the time. Not just the Bush-to-Obama version of four years ago, either; we just had a Pelosi-to-Boehner transition two ye... more »

Oldest Star in Universe

At some point, a flawed paradigm will start cranking out absurd results. In this instance, our paradigm for measuring age in the universe is telling us that a nearby star that is still in the hydrogen burn stage is older than the universe. This is nonsense of course. Atlantean Mining Technology Rediscovered and Modernized

You do want to go to the original on this one in order to work through the excellent pictures. Way more important however is that this clears up a major problem that I have had with Bronze Age, or Atlantean mining technology between about 2500 BC and 1159 BC. The Bronze Age assumption we have all accepted has involved the use of an open fire on the ore face to induce spalling to collect ore. It is a really bad idea simply because there is a loss of control of airflow almost immediately. Carbon monoxide makes it impossible and the heat delivery is terribly low. On to... more »

France lifts doubt over Dutchman as new Eurogroup head

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 15 hours ago
French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said on Sunday that he expected Dutch counterpart Jeroen Dijsselbloem to be appointed Eurogroup chief, suggesting Paris had bowed to the inevitable despite reservations about him. Just last week, Moscovici told a German newspaper he needed to know more about the Dutchman's agenda and suggested that the appointment might not be made before February at the earliest. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/20/us-eurozone-eurogroup-france-idUSBRE90J0I620130120

Center left ousts Merkel coalition in cliffhanger state vote

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 15 hours ago
Germany's center-left opposition edged Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives from power in a regional vote in Lower Saxony on Sunday, reviving its flagging hopes of defeating her in September's national election. The Social Democrats (SPD) and Greens won by a single seat after a close race for power in Germany's fourth most populous state. Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) lost ground but their Free Democrat (FDP) allies defied forecasts that they would be ejected from the state assembly in Hanover. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/21/us-germany-politics-election-idUSBRE90... more »

Dreamliner probe widens after excess battery voltage ruled out

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 15 hours ago
U.S. safety investigators on Sunday ruled out excess voltage as the cause of a battery fire this month on a Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner jet operated by Japan Airlines Co (JAL) and said they were expanding the probe to look at the battery's charger and the jet's auxiliary power unit. Last week, governments across the world grounded the Dreamliner while Boeing halted deliveries after a problem with a lithium-ion battery on a second 787 plane, flown by All Nippon Airways Co (ANA), forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing in western Japan. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/21/... more »

NIGER'S ambassador to Belgium and his wife have been found dead at their residence, apparently the victims of carbon monoxide poisoning, the embassy says. The bodies of Issaka Djibo, 61, and his wife, Fatouma, 50, were found in their bedroom by their daughter, alerted by an embassy employee who had not heard from the ambassador. Work Till You Drop

As a small time entrepreneur in San Francisco with my own indie record label I never thought about money except in terms of meeting our responsibilities to our artists and creditors and building the company. Money goes *into* small business startups, not out of them. For years my take home pay was $100/week. This was considerably before San Francisco's Mission District, where I lived and had my office (in a somewhat renovated firehouse), was gentrified. By the time we sold the company to SONY my take home pay had doubled. I felt rich. Then everything changed. TimeWarner hired me to... more »

Being in the main a compendium of links about l'Affaire Burchill. The most helpful one I think is Julie Burchill, transphobia and hostility towards the victims of oppression. Tellingly, it's in the Grauniad's Science section. The recent media furore over an article by Julie Burchill has brought to light prejudice against transgender individuals among people who should know better. But this tendency to demonise the victims of unfair treatment is a well established phenomenon It ends thus: But If I was going to try and explain all possible reasons for this animosity toward trans pe... more »

Free Download: "Star Maker" By Olaf Stapledon "Stapledon undertakes the immense task of describing the entire history of life in the universe. It dwarfs in scale even his 1930 book "Last and First Men," which is a history of the human species over two billion years. It tackles philosophical themes such as the essence of life, of birth, decay and death, and the relationship between creation and creator. The narrator starts with a concern at the clash of ideas on Earth and finds analogies to both communism and fascism among the aliens he visits. A pervading theme is that of progr... more »
